The students and faculty of Salt Lake City's Meadowlark Elementary School held an
assembly, October 10, to honor the life and guiding principles of Mahatma Gandhi. The
assembly was directed by Meadowlark's guidance counselor, Desiree Robinson.

The Reverend France Davis of Salt Lake's Calvary Baptist Church opened the assembly with
a presentation on the life of Dr. Marin Luther King Jr.. Reverend Davis was introduced by
sixth grade teacher, Richard Vigil-Johnson. Reverend Davis told of Dr. Kin's life and how he,
as a leader of the civil rights movement in the United States, applied the principles taught by
Mahatma.

Following Reverend Davis, a computer-generated visual presentation told of Gandhi's early
life as a lawyer, his experiences in South Africa with poverty and discrimination, and his
return to India where he used peaceful means to bring about change.

Hailey Maloney's sixth-grade class gave a reader's theater performance on Gandhi. Landon
was the narrator, with Kalil, Amela, and Webber as historians. David played the role of
Gandhi, and Apauw played the role of Kasturba, Gandhi's wife.

Marina Osipova, Meadowlark's music teacher, directed a student choir made up the third and
fourth graders singing a song on peace, a song about Gandhi, and a third piece called "we Are
the World, which was accompanied by a slide presentation.

The assembly concluded with the unfurling of a large banner reading, "You must be the
change you wish to see in the world."

Meadowlark is grateful for the opportunity to work with the Gandhi Alliance for Peace to
teach our students the power of peaceful change. We thank the Alliance for its donation of
books and a DVD. This month, as we honor Dr. King, we will use those materials to help our
students see what the two leaders had in common
