Buzz from the Board
The Gandhi Alliance board of directors is heartened by the recent news announcing the
proposed resolutions to the lawsuit brought by Utah's Navajos against the state. The $33
million settlement, which still requires legislative approval, holds the state accountable for
mismanaging a trust fund created by Congress in 1933 to receive and distribute royalties
from oil wells on tribal lands. "It's about time," says board member Sharon Odekirk, who
works as a relief pharmacist at the Monument Valley Clinic located on Navajo tribal land in
southeastern Utah. "The suit was filed in 1992 and the charges of corruption surfaced long
before that. I'm glad the Navajo people finally stand to benefit."
Other good news is the recognition of board member, Boyer Jarvis, as a state treasure. In
September, the Utah Humanities Council presented Boyer with its highest honor, the
Governor's Award in the Humanities, describing Boyer as a vigorous champion of civil
rights and the "conscience of our community." Congratulations, Boyer!
The board is grateful to the Interfaith Peacemaking Resource Center of Utah (IPRCU) for a
generous monetary gift made in December. Founded in 1982, IPRCU members worked for
social justice and peace until last year when the group adjourned for the last time. The
donation will be used to support the Alliance's education work in the elementary schools, a
fitting legacy for IPRCU and its treasury's remaining assets.
